The Memory Paintings

Going to the Lake, 2010, oil on canvas

A memory from the past, rendered in the tradition of his predecessor and fellow Norwegian Edvard Munch, the Memory Paintings series are works von Morisse started in 2010.  In “Going to the Lake”, 2012, the artist evoques his state of mind, reminiscent of his childhood in Norway, and remembers nostalgically the “happy days” of freedom and cheerfulness running in the forest near Finskögen.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was the greatest Norwegian painter. His brushstrokes technique and color palettes veered between naturalistic and impressionistic hints, simplified forms, heavy outlines, sharp contrasts, and emotional content. While stylistically influenced by the Post-Impressionists, Munch’s subject matter were symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.
